acid mothers temple - new geocentric world of acid mothers temple (2001)

in general, I prefer to post about albums that I think are exceptional, but in this case I'm posting because I want some feedback. its not that this album is bad, but it is kinda aimless and I'm not sure I really understand the Acid Mothers cult following. is it just because they are Japanese and play psych music, and those are two easy ingredients for a cult following? or are there other Acid Mothers Temple recordings where they really do something exceptional or exciting? this one seems to just be drifting, improvised psychedelia, although there are a few standout tracks- Occie Lady, a blown-out hard rocker, and What Do I Want to Know (Like Heavenly Kisses), Pt. 2, which is a long, warm ambient recording that sounds a little like Tim Hecker, or a symphony warming up. I was going to go see them last night, but as has been the case the last couple of times I've had a chance to see them, I decided to pass. maybe the live show is the key to their appeal? are there Acid Mothers Temple albums that I'm missing out on?

  1. I feel the same way about Acid Mothers Temple. Heard they were the shit bought this album and a couple others and was very underwhelmed. It was meandering, boring, pointless, and not even good psyche rock. In defense of them I would say "In C" is something worthwhile of theirs but it is essentially a cover of Terry Riley's " In C" and I would also check out Mainliner which is either the singer or guitarist of Acid Mothers in a rippingly loud heavy as hell hard rock band, a lot like Psychic Paramount the album is called "Mellow Out"

  3. I also didn't know that the bassist/vocalist in mainliner was the same from high rise! that makes a lot of sense.

  4. I think the draw for a lot of people, well at least for me, is that, with this album that is, these guys are one of the few bands to really channel and add to the Jap/Psch rock genre of the 70's primarily Les Rallizes Denudes and Taj Mahal Travellers. the thing that sucks is that these guys release way too much music therefore it's hard to know where to start and when you release that much music you will get a lot of apathy from people which is to be expected and deserved because so much of it is crap or just masturbatory. Yet, this one from what I have heard is just insane, especially that first track, it is just great LOUD drug music. Take it with a grain of salt and with the forethought that you won't be buying everything they make or would even want to hear everything they make.
