Preview: Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma

Just intercepted a few Cosmogramma promo tracks that have been floating around the internet (the Cosmogramma group on last.fm, specifically) for about a month now. And I gotta admit, they sound pretty promising. Album's due out on May 4th, but if you live in the bay area I highly recommend that you catch both Mr. Lotus and ultra-UK-electronic pioneer Kode9 at the Mezzanine on March 27th. I saw that same combo last year (along with The Bug) and it was mind-blowingly good. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Le tracks:

Flying Lotus - Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph by elpretentio2

Flying Lotus - Satelllliiiiiteee by elpretentio2

Flying Lotus - Computer Face//Pure Being by elpretentio2

  2. yeah I would have to say his shitty fans have ruined him for me and pretty much most of the other stuff on warp has been ruined by their fan base too, but his music is still pretty good for what it is

  4. i do like those other two new tracks a lot though. it's all a good improvement imho over most of the stuff on 'los angeles'.

  5. i feeling like caring about who listens to music other than you isn't a good way to go about deciding what music you like or don't

  6. yeah, you're mostly right. it just puts a slight damper on the live shows... (mosh pits?). i didn't mean that it ruined the actual music though. i still love dubstep and all it's children. :)

  10. No you shouldn't use a fan base as a means of assessing an artist, but it can still make you recoil from listening because of the associations attached, which of course are not fair to the artist, criticism should never be based on this. But then again, it is hard to avoid this, it seems to be in human nature to respond to the thoughts of others and the influence of your environment's judgments. For example, who doesn't have a band, they know and like, that make cool music, but whenever some douche bag you know mentions them, you feel like not wanting to listen to the music because it brings associations of that person? Sure you shouldn't let others get to you if you like the music, and again it really should never be justifiable to critically asses an artist's work; it's just unfair. By no means did I mean to say above that I critically judge artists in this manner, and I do like many warp artists, and again Flying Lotus is cool, although I think very overrated, his music is unique and I often enjoy it. But again, I will not deny that I do not like a large majority of his fan base and the L.A. beat scene is often obnoxious, and the values and image of the wonky/dubstep scene annoy me (if you want to know why I'll tell you). But hey that doesn't necessarily mean Flying Lotus's music or any other artists suck because a music scene annoys me! Okay!...but I am still going to mention my annoyances because it is part of my experience of the whole gestalt of the music. My earlier comment was poorly expressed. And sorry if you find this all annoying and, me, trite and arrogant...I just like to discuss this stuff, I am not intending to piss people off, which is obviously unavoidable.

  11. woah i dont think anyone got pissed off did they? i thought everyone was making fair points. i'm in the same boat as you mark, i do the same thing, i was just saying that i try not to is all.

  13. oh no I wasn't implying anyone was pissed off, just had to explain myself, that's the problem with the internet, it's hard to see the tone of voice people are using. I meant people in general, not necessarily speed, glue, and music, often get pissed off by these kinds of things, but the debate is always interesting...sorry should have been more detailed. And I think I am taking this too far, I'll shut up now...
